Acoustic room treatment for a small studio

A small home-office room rarely sounds the way it looks. The walls may be freshly finished, the desk tidy, the monitors competent, yet the room does most of the work, and in a 3 × 4 meter space it usually does it badly. Parallel walls trap standing waves, or room modes, that exaggerate some frequencies and swallow others. First reflections off the side walls and ceiling arrive milliseconds after the direct sound, smearing the stereo image and giving small rooms their boxy color. None of this is a fault of the speakers; it is the acoustic behavior of the volume, fixed in the room rather than the gear.

The figure a small mix or voice room is designed to hit is an RT60 — reverberation time, the seconds taken for a sound to decay by 60 dB — of between 0.3 and 0.5 across the mid-band. A typical 3 × 4 meter room with a 3 meter ceiling is roughly 36 m³ in volume. The Sabine equation gives the total sound absorption required as approximately 0.161 · V / RT60_target. At the 0.4 s midpoint that works out to about 14.5 sabins of equivalent absorption area, before furnishings. That figure is a design target, not a guarantee of a flat response — it is the starting point for laying out panels so the room behaves predictably.

Wool felt panels, 50 mm thick at around 40 kg/m³, are broadband absorbers and form the first layer of treatment in any small room. Their sound absorption coefficient is roughly flat across the upper bass and lower treble — the band where comb-filtering is most audible — so they pull down the first-reflection points without dragging the lows. The front wall between and behind the speakers, and the side walls at the listener's first-reflection points — found by the mirror trick, where a mirror laid flat on the speaker baffle reveals the ear position — need this coverage. The color of the facing felt can be tuned to the room, but the working part is the wool fiber behind it.

Slotted wood diffusers are not absorbers; they scatter. A 2 ft × 8 ft panel of well-designed slots mounted on the rear wall behind the listening position breaks up flutter echo between the front and back surfaces without removing RT60 energy. The room keeps a sense of life, and the back of the acoustic image is no longer a hard wall returning early reflections at full strength.

Corner bass traps do the heaviest lifting. Room modes pile up where two surfaces meet, so broadband low-frequency control has to begin in every vertical corner. 100 mm wool-filled columns mounted floor-to-ceiling handle the upper bass. Where budget allows, a membrane or diaphragmatic trap layered behind the wool sharpens the response in the 40 to 80 hertz band, the hardest region to pull down in a small volume.

A single 50 mm ceiling cloud at the first ceiling reflection — the spot a mirror laid flat on the speaker baffle shows — tightens the phantom center of the stereo image and removes the worst of the slap from overhead. This is the line to add if monitors are desk-mounted and there is no soffit to do that work for you.

For the typical 12 m², 36 m³ home-office studio, a workable split is roughly 25 percent of wall area under broadband absorbers, about 10 percent under diffusers on the rear wall, and every vertical corner trapped floor-to-ceiling. That is a starting point, not a recipe; the exact areas depend on speaker type, listening distance, and existing furnishings.

The order of operations matters more than the totals. Measure first — a UMIK-1 microphone paired with Room EQ Wizard (REW) shows where the room is actually resonant and where treatment pays back. Then corner traps, then broadband absorbers on the reflection points, then diffusers last, so the room is stable before anything scatters energy. An over-treated room is not better than untreated; a dead room flatters the sound but fatigues the listener and strips the cues that let a mix translate elsewhere. The program is to optimize the room, not silence it.
